I was in the Atlanta area attending a wedding which was a blast by the way so I didn’t get to see too much football.

I did get the occasional update from Elon University’s opener at home against Richmond and unfortunately it wasn’t a good result for the Phoenix.

The chatter I’ve heard after just one game has been pretty negative for Elon, which, don’t forget, lost to a better and higher ranked team in the Spiders. The early disappointment and feeling of being let down just shows you how high expectations are at Elon this year.

Elon will come back this Saturday and destroy Stony Brook on the road; I’ve got a good feeling.

Most of the high profile games last weekend ended up being busts. Southern Cal crushed Virginia and LSU crushed App State. There weren’t any stunning upsets, but East Carolina did spoil Virginia Tech’s opener and Michigan lost for the second straight year on opening day.

This Saturday is my birthday and although I’m not sure of what my plans are yet, I think a nice relaxing day of watching college football could be in order.

Also, the NFL season starts Thursday night so get excited for that. A full slate of games is in store for Sunday. I love the weekends in the fall.

Well, kind of.

Of course I’m interested in the draft and who my favorite team the New England Patriots draft, but I don’t care for the ridiculous amount coverage.

This time of year ESPN dedicates its network to the NFL Draft even though the NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing. I’d also much rather watch a college baseball game on ESPN than 20 some odd hours of the draft.

The network will be airing every round and pick of the draft with pregame, postgame analysis. Everything you need to know, don’t need to know and wouldn’t even care to know will be covered this weekend.

I don’t care for the product I just want to see the end result. I’ll glance when it’s all over at who went where.

This weekend I’ll be keeping a close eye on Elon’s baseball team. The Phoenix has a three-game series against UNC Greensboro on the road. The Spartans are hungry to stay in the conference championship race. Right now, Elon, College of Charleston and UNCG all have five losses in the league. Elon is in first because it has more league wins because it has played more games.

This weekend is a big series for the Phoenix. Last weekend Elon dropped two of three from the Cougars which hurt Elon a little bit, but it still controls its own destiny.

Another thing I’m excited for this weekend is Elon’s spring football game. Usually I don’t care for this stuff and prefer to wait until August, but after attending Elon’s road tour in Greensboro last night, I’m excited for the upcoming season.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to attend Saturday’s game at 3 p.m. in Rhodes Stadium, but I’m going to try. Coach Pete Lembo spoke at the event and seemed extremely positive about the team he has for the upcoming season.

Elon returns its two best and most explosive players, QB Scott Riddle and wide receiver Terrell Hudgins. I can’t wait to watch these two go off again this season.

Nobody’s practicing and no games are being played, but college football is in the driver’s seat this week.

All the hype surrounds National Signing Day, the one day each year that high school seniors dominate the college football world.

These players will become the foundation of football programs across the nation. The battle to sign the top high school athletes is over and players are announcing their officially announcing their decisions today and signing their names to letters of intent.

National Signing Day isn’t just about the top studs of high school football, the top 150 or 250 according to major recruiting lists, it’s about everyone. High schools everywhere are holding events for the media and fans to showcase their local talent. Athletes are signing all kinds of letters, from Division I to Division III.

The Division I signees steal the headlines, but locally National Signing Day is much more. Herds of players in Alamance County have already signed letters of intent today with Levon Curtis of Western Alamance committing to Western Carolina.

Two Eastern Alamance defensive players, Allen Crowder and Bill Wallace, will play at East Carolina next season.

Not all of these players will have an impact on their respective schools next fall, but every year some fall into major roles.

Julie Jones, ranked No. 1 by ESPN, has committed to Alabama. Some scouts say he could make an impact right away on Nick Saban’s squad.

National signing Day is a big waiting day for schools too. Schools have to wait for verbal commitments to turn into officially signings.
