Knight takes his wins record and tosses in the towel

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 by Alex Kreitman

Bobby Knight submitted a letter of resignation Monday, leaving his post as head men’s basketball coach at Texas Tech.

5-knight-2.JPGKnight did so with at least 11 games left in the regular season and with a record 902 career victories under his belt.

Knight will be missed in college basketball. He might be the most missed coach in the history of the game. His antics and methods provided us with countless hours of entertainment. His fits and rampages with referees and players accounted for plenty of sports highlights over the years.

But aside from his public displays of anger and outrage, Knight was one of the best coaches the game has ever seen.

Knight won three national titles at Indiana and finished a perfect 32-0 season in one of them. He also won a gold medal. But sadly he won’t be remembered for those magnificent accomplishments.

5-knight.JPGWhen Bobby Knight’s name comes up in conversations around the local tavern or at the dinner table, it won’t be because of his 902 wins. It will go something like this: “Remember when that crazy old Knight threw that chair across the damn court. He’s a crazy SOB.”

But what I don’t understand is why now? He says he’s tired and is ready to retire, but he just signed a three-year contract extension in September. Why sign it if you weren’t up to coaching three more years? He barely made three more months.

I don’t like when people give up midseason. I think he should’ve finished out the season and then retired on a higher note. The Red Raiders are 12-8 this year, but they’re No. 54 in RPI which still gives them a shot at the NCAA Tournament. He should’ve stuck it out another month and a half. But either way, I’ll still miss watching him go nuts on the court.

I’m so sick of the Super Bowl right now. My stomach churns inside every time I turn on the TV or visit some of my favorite Web sites. The Patriots lost and that thought still makes my body ache all over.

But what hurts more is knowing that I have to wait a whole year until they can get back to the Super Bowl, which they will, to avenge this horrible loss.

I seriously believe that the Patriots will be right back in the middle of the perfect season discussions next year. I don’t know if they can go 19-0 again or if anyone can, but if anyone has a shot it’s them. They’ll have the same team back next year and will probably improve in some places to become even stronger. I just wish it wasn’t so far away.

A Super Bowl note to Giants fans: Act like you’ve been there before.

5-pats.JPGI said congratulations Monday in this blog and I acknowledged that the Giants played a great game and deserved to win.

This note isn’t directed at every Giants fan, my roommate hasn’t rubbed anything in and my friend Rob Kiser hasn’t either, but there have been so many others who have.

It is so low and disrespectful to rub in the fact that you won to a devoted fan of the losing team. Have some class. You don’t see Eli Manning calling Tom Brady and laughing in his face. Michael Strahan isn’t calling Randy Moss and asking him “what the hell happened to you guys? 18-1 what?”

So stop calling me, stop texting me, and stop instant messaging me, with similar words. It’s just not cool. Have some class and at like you’ve been there before.

By the way, it’s less than 10 days until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training.
