Nobody’s practicing and no games are being played, but college football is in the driver’s seat this week.
All the hype surrounds National Signing Day, the one day each year that high school seniors dominate the college football world.
These players will become the foundation of football programs across the nation. The battle to sign the top high school athletes is over and players are announcing their officially announcing their decisions today and signing their names to letters of intent.
National Signing Day isn’t just about the top studs of high school football, the top 150 or 250 according to major recruiting lists, it’s about everyone. High schools everywhere are holding events for the media and fans to showcase their local talent. Athletes are signing all kinds of letters, from Division I to Division III.
The Division I signees steal the headlines, but locally National Signing Day is much more. Herds of players in Alamance County have already signed letters of intent today with Levon Curtis of Western Alamance committing to Western Carolina.
Two Eastern Alamance defensive players, Allen Crowder and Bill Wallace, will play at East Carolina next season.
Not all of these players will have an impact on their respective schools next fall, but every year some fall into major roles.
Julie Jones, ranked No. 1 by ESPN, has committed to Alabama. Some scouts say he could make an impact right away on Nick Saban’s squad.
National signing Day is a big waiting day for schools too. Schools have to wait for verbal commitments to turn into officially signings.
